DRUKNROLL (for Sorock)2023

Recently, Progressive Melodic Modern Thrash/Death Metal band Druknroll presented their next full-length album “My Dark Desires” to the listener’s judgment. The event is significant for the musicians, so we decided to ask the band members questions. Denis (guitar) and Druknroll (guitar, bass, keys, drums) were cross-examined with a musical passion in order to find out what’s what.

So, some time has passed since the release of “My Dark Desires”. How did you like the feedback from the listener, was it good? Are you happy with the result?

Denis: I am very happy with the result! This is the case when after the work done you feel completely satisfied and there is no desire to change anything! We worked really hard and the listener appreciated it too!

Druknroll: Yes, everything worked out great! We are playing metal, what could be better! If we had recorded an album together with Ruki Vverh, for example, then I would have suffered!

The album has a lot of dark and, in a way, “brainstorming” tracks. Can you tell us more about the background and message of the tracks?

Druknroll: I never tire of quoting one music critic who said that on this album we looked beyond the edge of mental dysphoria… How is that? Who is this? What does this even mean, a pick in my ear! Googled it… Severe dysphoria manifests itself in melancholy, anger, a sense of despair and hopelessness, as well as outbursts of rage. How accurately everything is said, just licked from my brain!

If you try to draw a parallel between “My Dark Desires” and previous works – “Unbalanced” and “Freakingface”, then the current album – is it a continuation, an evolution or something completely different? What is the similarity, and what is the difference, in your opinion, as creators?

Denis: I see evolution in this album. We have improved both in performance skills and in musical thinking. Perhaps dark matter helped us with this! Definitely, the differences with previous works are here thanks to this dark energy.

Druknroll: As for me, this is a continuation of previous works, before this there was no concept, there were attempts at different styles, throwing around styles, and now a clear direction has appeared – hacking the brain!

There is an opinion that aggression and darkness inherent in metal is a kind of working through fears, through the knowledge of the negative (well, like, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance of reality by the musician). Can this concept be related to the work of Druknroll in general and “My Dark Desires” in particular?

Denis: We literally declare this with the title of our album! Awareness and acceptance have been achieved.

Druknroll: … Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance of reality by the musician… Yes, all this does not apply to metal, but rather to jazz, try to hit 300-400 grams of tea and turn on, for example, Armstrong! Your brain will go beyond your brain!

If the task was to choose 1 track from the new record that will be listened to by those who have not heard your music yet, then this track would be….

Denis: Definitely the track “Hate”!

Druknroll: “Apparent Lies”, from the first seconds of the track you begin to experience dysphoria, dysfunction and destruction at the same time, a mediator in my brain!

I saw that your album was also released on CD, quite a bold move in the age of universal digitalization. Is this a tradition or something else? In general, in your opinion, what is the difference between clicking to listen to an album on a device or listening to it on a CD?

Druknroll: Yes, the digital version was released on Polygon Records, and the CD on Dark East Productions, we are happy with everything! As for digitalization, it all reminds me of a Chinese tea ceremony, here you first need to enjoy the silence, then slowly open the disc, sniff the printing, put the disc in the player and enjoy the music, shaking your hair properly, and not on the go splash something stronger into your tea and run…

Varg Vikerness (Norwegian musician, creator and sole participant of the black metal musical project Burzum) once said the following: “I don’t want to have anything in common with you or with the thoroughly sick world you live in. Keep your leprous urban brothel and your hell on earth.”

What would you answer him to this? (we don’t promise to convey the answer, but we will listen carefully 🙂

Druknroll: F**K’N’DRUK’N’ROCK’N’ROLL!!!

Any wishes, otherworldly messages, curses for the readers of this interview?

Denis: Kulu Fhtagn!

Druknroll: Start your day with a tea ceremony of drinking “My Dark Desires” and you will be high as a child!
